Plenary Council

Plenary Council Thanksgiving Mass: a Thanksgiving Mass is to be celebrated at 6 PM Mass this weekend to thank God for the opportunity we had as a Parish community to participate in many different ways of response towards the Plenary Council process during the past phase of the 2018 Year of Listening.

2nd Year starting after Ash Wednesday: 2019 “The Year of Discerning”.- this year will include: Catholic Education Leadership Conference; Plenary Day for Clergy – 15th of March; Plenary day for Parish/School/Agengy/Network Teams, 16th March; Diocesan Assembly, 13-14 September.- In the months leading up to the Assembly, the diocesan community is being invited to embark on a period of prayer and preparation with a Diocesan Pilgrimage of the Icon of our Lady of Perpetual Help (the Patroness of our diocese) and the Diocesan Plenary 2020 Candle. Each parish will host the Icon and Candle for one week. This week’s Pilgrimage host is at  St Mary’s Catholic Church, Yarram.

The law of Fasting binds those who have completed their eighteenth year, until the beginning of their sixtieth year. The law of Abstinence binds those who have completed their fourteenth year. All Fridays are days of penance in the Catholic Church and it can be a good practice to abstain from meat on all Fridays in Lent as well as Good Friday, or you may substitute another penance.

RCIA – RITE OF SENDING AND RITE OF ELECTION – 10th March 2019

Dear Parishioners, we ask your prayers for our Catechumen, Dilmini Gamaralalage and our Baptised Candidate Catholic, Krishendi De Silva as they continue their faith journey towards Easter. Next week, on the 1st Sunday of Lent, both will take part in the Rite of Sending and the Rite of Election.

The Rite of Sending will take place in our Parish at 9 am Mass. This rite offers the parish community an opportunity to acknowledge the spiritual progress both Dilmini and Krishendi have made. We will give approval of their elect to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation at Easter and we will send them forth to our Bishop with reassurance of care and support.

The Rite of Election will take place at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sale at 2 pm. This rite represents the final decision of Dilmini and every catechumen brought to Sale to enter the Catholic Church and their commitment to respond to Jesus’ call. For Krishendi, already enriched by Baptism, this rite means her vow to prepare fully to complete her Sacraments of Initiation. In response to their decision and the community and sponsors acclamation to the participants’ readiness, our Bishop will accept and choose them to enter into the final period of preparation during Lent and towards Easter when they will receive the Sacraments of Initiation.

AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS CONFERENCE

Statement from Archbishop Mark Coleridge, President of the Australian Bishops Conference (February 26, 2019)

The news of Cardinal George Pell’s conviction on historical child sexual abuse charges has shocked many across Australia and around the world, including the Catholic Bishops of Australia.

The Bishops agree that everyone should be equal under the law, and we respect the Australian legal system. The same legal system that delivered the verdict will consider the appeal that the Cardinal’s legal team has lodged. Our hope, at all times, is that through this process, justice will be served.

In the meantime, we pray for all those who have been abused and their loved ones, and we commit ourselves anew to doing everything possible to ensure that the Church is a safe place for all, especially the young and the vulnerable.
